UPMS Video Letter - Porto Alegre

The UPMS – Global Knowledge Network – intends to contribute to reach a global social justice by acting to build upon a global cognitive justice. The main goal of the UPMS is to make the alternative globalization widely noticeable and make the transformative actions even more informed, in order to make the protagonists of these actions more autonomous and reflexive.

Besides facilitating the convergence and exchange of knowledges among social movements at the local level, the UPMS challenges itself to make possible the encounter among different social movements at the global and regional level. To work within these different scales, the UPMS brought together activists, engaged researchers and social movements in three workshops held in different cities within Porto Alegre’s metropolitan area: São Leopoldo, Canoas and Porto Alegre. The workshops comprised one third of Brazilian social movements and two-third of Latin American social movements and took place under the Thematic Social Forum "Crisis of Capitalism: Social Justice and Environmental Justice" held in Porto Alegre from 24 to 29 January, 2012.

The inter-thematic workshops were:

Workshop 1 – Land, Food sovereignty, Human rights and Solidarity/popular economies

Workshop 2 – Interculturality, Plurinationality and African-descendent/ Indigenous

Workshop 3 – Ecology, Mother Earth, Natural resources and Extractivism.

Thus, the UPMS workshops contributed to the debates and discussions held in the Thematic Social Forum of 2012.
